Learning4LIFE: Encouraging Engagement
We are very grateful to the management of Kamakshi Memorial Hospital, and to Child Development Center team for encouraging Ananth to perform at the workshop for parents of children with autism and related disabilities. We are grateful to Dr. Govindarajan and to Dr. Radhakrishnan for supporting Ananth in pursuing a diploma in Hospital Documentation and Medical Records at Kamakshi Hospital as this has expanded Ananth's engagement in the workplace and in the community. A special thanks to Dr. Rajeshwari, Head of Pediatrics, for her energy and enthusiasm. We are also grateful to Dr. Shivranjani, Dr. Bhairavi, and Mr. Leo Malise Vincent Jeyaraj for their efforts to organize the workshop. As always we are grateful for Professor Mohanan's encouragement, support, and guidance.
Over 20 years ago, I had the opportunity to be the editor of a monograph on service-learning in accounting. This monograph was one of a series of monographs on service-learning across the disciplines. Service-learning is an approach that seeks to integrate classroom learning and community engagement in order to develop students into engaged citizens. This work has continued to inform my thinking as a parent and as an educator. As children with varied challenges grow up, can we identify ways to engage them in the community? How can we help diverse learners become engaged citizens?
In 2018, The PhD Project, an organization that seeks to diversify the workforce by diversifying business school faculty, published my book on Growing Systems of Success. In this book, I evolved my ideas of community engagement in terms of paying it forward. We learn from others, and we share what we know to benefit others! By encouraging Ananth to dance at the workshop, he had an opportunity to pay forward what he has learned over the years. Hopefully, some more parents will consider dance (especially Bharatanatyam) as a vehicle for development in the future!
Ananth's Learning4LIFE Map
Today, we updated Ananth's map to show activities that are completed, in-progress, and to be done. We will organize activities in each category (Learning Foundations, Interests, Family, and Engagement) into these categories.
